One of the things that’s been a challenge for people throughout the decades since The Science Of Getting Rich was published is the extent to which the conscious and the subconscious mind have a role to play in this process.
If we think of the conscious mind as willpower, then things become clearer.
When manifesting, you don’t try and apply your willpower to anything outside of yourself.
Indeed, you don’t need to apply your will power, in an attempt to compel other people, the universe, or God to fulfil your wishes.
Why? Because the universal intelligence is on your side, and it’s more than ready to give you what you want – probably more willing to give it to you than you are ready to receive it, if the truth be known.
The only place that your willpower has any relevance, says Wattles, is when you apply it to yourself.

Willpower and Manifestation
You use willpower on yourself so you think in the right way and you know what to do.
In other words, the legitimate use of your willpower is to hold yourself steadily on the right course.
You simply use your mind to form a mental image of what you want, and use your willpower to hold that vision with faith and purpose.
And then, the image of what you want, backed by the emotional fuel of the feelings you will have when you actually get it, is released into the universe, and together these things cause the universal intelligence to manifest your desires.
This is how this process is described in The Science of Getting Rich:
“The picture of your desires, held with faith and purpose, is taken up by the Formless, and permeates throughout the universe. As the impression spreads, all things are set moving towards its realization; every living thing, every inanimate thing, and the things yet uncreated, are stirred toward bringing into being that which you want. A force begins to be exerted in that direction; all things begin to move toward you. The minds of people everywhere are influenced towards doing the things necessary to the fulfilling of your desires, and they work for you, unconsciously.”
I couldn’t really have put that better myself. And let’s put this into a bigger context: if you aren’t controlling what’s happening to you, you become the subject of somebody else’s life plan, desires and wishes.
Which position would you rather occupy? That of control, or that of being controlled? (A shamanistic view.)
The Role of Negativity in Attraction & CoCreation
We all know that being negative is unhelpful when trying to manifest anything, but at the same time almost everyone who’s ever tried to use the Law of Attraction will have experienced doubts and fears of some kind.
Negativity is an enemy because doubt, uncertainty, or unbelief take you away from faith and purpose.
Every time you give way to doubts and fears, every time you worry, and every time you let belief be replaced by disbelief, you are moved away from the achievement of your goal.
So how do we deal with this? After all, doubts and fears are a natural state of the human condition. And when you’re short of money, it’s natural to focus on your fears of what may happen if you don’t have it.
There are many ways of dealing with this, and two of the simplest are (1) to focus on how you’ll feel when you’ve achieved your objective, and (2) simply to doubt your doubts.
Let me explain.
If you have large debts, and you’re trying to manifest money to pay them off, it’s natural to worry about what might happen if you are not able to.
To avoid this, focus on how you’ll feel when your debts are paid off. What will that relief be like? That’s a powerful energy.
And every time you begin to experience doubts about the possibility that you will pay your debts off, replace your doubts with the image of how you’ll feel when your debts are paid off.
Secondly, when doubts enter your mind, then allow yourself simply to doubt that they are real. By introducing the possibility that your doubts and worries and fears will not come to pass, you permit an opening to develop – and it’s an opening into which you can insert a more positive image of your future!
Yes, this requires effort, and it requires self-discipline – in fact, as Wattles said, it requires willpower.
But that is the challenge of what I call the spiritual warrior: which in this case, is YOU as you try to use the Law of Attraction (which by any stretch of the imagination is a spiritual process).
The energy of the spiritual warrior is not necessarily physical but mental. It can take the form of self-discipline and alertness.
Remember That Things Are Not Brought into Being By Thinking about Their Opposites
In other words, if you want to be rich, you must not think about poverty.
If you want to be healthy, you must not think about disease.
If you want to be virtuous, you must not think about sin.
For the basic principle here is as true now as it was in 1910 when Wattles’ book was published – living an authentic life of integrity is one of the most difficult things that any human being can aspire to.
And what does integrity mean?
It means you do what you say you will do, that you are who you claim to be, and that your actions match your words.
It means that if you have moral principles, you make the choice to live by them rather than giving into temptation.
And in the area of manifestation, using the universal Law of Attraction, it means that you maintain your belief, you maintain your desire, and you maintain your expectancy until you get what you want.
This can be challenging. We are brought up with the idea of helping the poor, of being charitable, as one of our values.
Yet there is some truth in the idea that charity perpetuates the problem it tries to eliminate because it takes away responsibility for solving problems from the people who have them.
Perhaps the best way to help the poor, says Wattles, is by becoming rich, and offering them employment by which they can then make their own way in the world.
For you, though, the message is that it’s essential not to focus on deprivation and lack. And as you may know, being charitable can have that turn your attention in that direction.
Wattles was quite hardline about this: he said that the poor do not need charity, they need inspiration. He suggested that charity did nothing more than to keep people alive in their own “wretchedness”, and that it was “inspiration” which would cause them to rise out of misery.
Creation vs Competition
And he was quite clear about the moral aspects of becoming rich: he disapproved of competition, because competition in his eyes led to few getting rich and a lot being kept down – a perfect model of a capitalist society.
For him, the right model was to get rich by creation, and thereby open the pathway for thousands of others to follow with the inspiration that you can offer them.
Keeping The Vision Clean and Clear
Chapter 10 of The Science Of Getting Rich offers more information about how it’s possible to maintain a true and clear vision of wealth creation by manifestation.
For example, if wealth creation is your ambition, keep silent about the problems you’ve had of a financial nature.
Do not speak of the poverty of your parents, or the hardships of your early life, or any other thing to do with poverty which would destroy your belief in the possibility of becoming rich – or at least slow down the speed with which wealth could move in your direction.
In short, put poverty and all things that “pertain to poverty” completely behind you.
What about the negative things you see around yourself in the world today?
Well, the question here is simple: what good does it serve you to focus on those things if you’re powerless to do anything about them (or if you choose not to do anything about them?)
There’s something self-indulgent in human nature which leads us to be more drawn to the negative into the positive. The “ain’t it awful” brigade, who are all around you, all the time, and eagerly trying to recruit you into their game every minute of every day, will have you despondent and despairing before you realize it.
There’s no point asking why human nature is like this – the fact is, that’s the way it is.
Your challenge is to use your willpower and self-discipline to avoid this kind of thinking, and to avoid the kind of people who indulge in it.
Now that’s easy enough if you set a clear intention to spend your time among positive people, but it may be less easy if you yourself have a habit of feeling depressed, despondent or despairing.
If that’s the case for you, you need to find some motivational source which can lift you beyond your negativity.
Positive affirmations may help. Positive self-hypnosis may help. A peer group of like-minded individuals who are resolutely positive and committed to manifesting a new and better reality may help.
You need to find your own solution to avoid the negative.
And make no mistake about it, if you’re serious about getting what you want through manifestation, then the Law of Attraction will always be working in your subconscious: like attracts like.
So if you think negatively, you will attract negativity. You think positively, you will attract positive energy. It really is as simple as that, and the choice is yours, always yours.
And remember – by succumbing to the negative, you are likely to reinforce it in the world at large. You’re going to do the world a lot more good focusing on the positive.
There’s almost a moral imperative these days, it seems, for us to focus on horrible conditions in other countries – but what Wattles said then is as relevant now as it’s always been: “No matter how horrible the conditions may seem in certain countries, sections, or places, you waste your time and destroy your own chances by considering them.”
You should interest yourself in the world becoming rich – think of the riches the world is coming into instead of the poverty it’s growing out of. Think of the peace and harmony it’s moving into, rather than the troubled transition times which may be happening right now. Give your attention to environmental preservation rather than focusing on the destruction.
When you see events happening that you judge to be negative, think of them as a transition time to something much more positive.
But of course this does not mean that you can be selfish or mean-spirited! There is a lot more capacity for doing good when you’re rich then is when you’re poor.
And it’s certainly true that you can only reach your full potential when you’ve risen above what effectively is a battle for survival.
In a philosophical and spiritual way, you need to understand that no matter how it may seem to our eyes on this world today, the universal intelligence knows exactly what is right for us, for the planet, and for the universe, and you can be assured that it’s moving inexorably forward in the direction.
The fact that we arrogant humans think we know it all, does not alter the truth that we cannot see the purpose behind the grand design.
And neither must we give way to despair.
Staying positive is an act of faith in the power of the universe, in the rightness of the natural order, and in the belief that everything is moving to a better way of being.
The very best thing you can do to contribute to the betterment of mankind, or the benefit of the world, is to make the most of yourself while you are alive on this planet.
