Here, we’re going to look at three important issues:
- The Difference Between The Law Of Attraction and The Law Of Creation
- The Definition of Manifestation and its Relationship to The Law Of Attraction
- Does Attraction Always Work? If Not, Why Not?
But first, let’s explore …..
The Nature Of Reality Creation
As you may know, there have been many definitions of manifestation and attraction over the years, offered by many different teachers. The concept most people use these days comes from books and movies like The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne.
The Secret was published in 2006, and very quickly became immensely popular because it suggested that anyone, regardless of who they are, or how rich they are, can use certain universal Laws to bring anything they want into their life.
That really is how the power of manifestation and attraction was represented in The Secret: want a car? No problem. Want a big house? No problem. Want lots of money? No problem. All you have to do is ask with sufficient intensity, open to receiving, and expect it to happen…
…. And lo and behold, with a bit of intense visualization of your desired outcome, it will appear in your life. That’s how most people think Attraction works, and worse still, it’s often represented as an infallible process.
In other words, if you don’t get what you want, it’s your fault. (Not the fault of the people teaching you how to use this amazing universal law. You may have some questions about this!)
By the way, some people prefer to use the term Law Of Creation. This also refers to the same process of getting what you want by using your mental powers.
But there is a problem. For a lot of people the supposedly infallible power of attraction doesn’t work. You might well ask: is that because there isn’t a Law Of Attraction, or is it because most people don’t know how to make it work for them?
I’m sure you’ve seen enough people around you who’ve tried to get what they want by visualizing it in the recommended way, and have given up disappointed. Who knows, you might even have tried to do it yourself!
In essence, the Law of Attraction is taught in most popular books as if you can create, or manifest, anything you want in your life with very little effort. What’s missing from these explanations are certain key points. We’ll have a look at those in a minute.
Before we do that, though, let’s think about manifestation. What exactly does that word mean?
Well, it’s very simple. Manifestation is just the word used to describe the process by which you can bring something into your life using Law Of Attraction principles and techniques.
So, for example, if you are trying to get a great romantic relationship, then when your girlfriend or boyfriend appears in your life, we’d say that you’d manifested a relationship. Simple as that: there’s nothing complicated about it; it’s just one way of expressing the process of attracting or creating something into your life.
Okay, so back to the teachings of modern day writers on how to manifest whatever you want by means of attraction.
Like I said above, it’s often represented as a very straightforward and simple process: ask, and you shall receive. You’ll have heard some of these sayings, too, I’m sure: As a man thinketh in his heart, so he is. Believe, and you shall receive. Unto him who asks, it shall be given. Seek, and ye shall find. Knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
For me, the obvious thing that’s missing here is any sense of personal responsibility, or even any personal effort to make the creation process actually work.
It’s a mistake to assume that the universe is set up in a way such that it will just dish out the things we want simply because we happen to want them enough to devote a few minutes picturing them in our mind’s eye, our imagination.
The problem is we live in a society where a lot of people expect something for nothing. So representing the way attraction works as “Ask and you shall receive” plays straight into people’s greed, ignorance, and – to put it bluntly – their belief that the world owes them a living.
This is not the way the world works. It’s not the way Attraction works, either!
I need hardly point out, I’m sure, that if this was how it worked (“Ask and you shall receive”) then we wouldn’t have the poverty, deprivation, and negativity that we see all around us in the world today.
So clearly there’s something missing, either in our understanding of how this works, or in the teaching of modern writers.
It’s a little bit of both actually. And it centers on the formula by which the Law Of Attraction operates:
Desire + Belief + Expectancy + Action = Manifestation
Here, we’re going to examine every aspect of this formula or law, so that you’ll get a clear idea of how you can actually make things happen in your own life.
But there are some other issues to look at first.
